Dr. Chen recommends that patients with healthy teeth and gums schedule a check-up appointment every six months. We will examine your teeth, screen for oral cancer, clean your teeth, and evaluate other potentially serious problems. By finding problems in the early stages, we can often correct it with conservative treatment. Patients with periodontal problems may need to visit us every three to four months. We will evaluate your existing condition and set a follow-up date with you.
Swollen and bleeding gums may indicate early signs of periodontal (gum) disease. Because these symptoms are generally mild and painless, many people ignore them and the disease progresses. In its earliest stage, it is still reversible. If left untreated, however, it can progress to a more severe stage called periodontitis, which is loss of bone structure surrounding your tooth. If you notice that your gums bleed after you brush, or if they are red, swollen, or tender, contact our office to make an appointment.
Dental implants are prosthetic teeth that closely mimic nature. The small titanium implant post acts as a tooth root, a solid foundation on which an esthetic crown is placed. Dental implants can last a lifetime and require similar care to natural teeth. Dentures, partials, and bridges are held in place by clasps or adhesives, so the fit is not as secure as with implants, and slippage can occur. While these prosthetics function adequately, they do not offer the solid, reliable function that dental implants offer, and they do not last as long. Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in America, and the symptoms are often mild and painless. Once this progressive condition takes hold, it can quickly advance from gingivitis to periodontitis. When you visit our dental office for a checkup or cleaning, the doctor will assess your gums for signs of periodontal disease. If detected, the disease can be eradicated and damage repaired with periodontal therapy. Our goal is your best smile, and healthy gums are an important part of oral health. As a family and children’s dental practice, we treat patients of all ages. We encourage parents to bring in their sons and daughters for the first dental checkup after their 1st birthday. This first visit helps build a solid foundation for a lifetime of healthy oral habits and regular dental visits. Short and easy appointments as toddlers help make children far less apprehensive as they get older. Please contact our office for more information.
We encourage parents to play an active role in their children’s oral health. Normally, during the initial examination, we allow one parent to accompany their child due to space limitations. If treatment is necessary, we will determine if the child will cooperate better with or without a parent in the treatment room. We will work with parents to determine the best method to encourage the child to cooperate willingly.
